We started our morning on December 22nd meeting
Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa before completing the third
health. We introduced ourselves to the governor. The president of the Isioma
Okobah Foundation and president of Medical Students Making a difference Isioma and
Kylah Okobah explained the purpose of our trip to Nigeria and the goal of the
village health fairs. We had the chance to thank the Nigerian govorner
personally for the security and accommodations provided during our stay. Later
in the morning we departed to serve the native village of the president, Owa
Alero.
During the health fair, I shadowed a Nigerian doctor as he conducted a small education session to ten elderly women. The doctor explained the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and complying with medications. He also explained the importance of going to the doctor for annual cervical and breast exams. He even let me explain how to conduct a breast exam while he translated. This experience is one that I will cherish on my journey to becoming a doctor. This health fair truly felt surreal as I was living out my dream to educate people of an underserved area on how to live a healthier lifestyle.
