Christmas Day in Onicha Ugbo Village

On Christmas day we had a Christmas party for the children of Onicha Ugbo Village. We also met the Governor's wife and described our journey.

We spent Christmas day in Dr. Okobah’s native village, Onicha Ugbo. We had a tour of her beautiful Nigerian home. We spent the day dancing and playing games with the local village children. After the Christmas party we proceeded to the governor’s second home for dinner with his wife. -Demetria Walker

  1. We shared with the governor’s wife the opposition and challenges we all experienced on our journey to attend the trip to Nigeria. We also revealed common stereotypes that had since been debunked on our journey. The governor’s wife was amazed at the precautions many people advised us to take on our journey. Meeting the governor’s wife warmed my heart as we introduced ourselves and she embraced each of us with a hug. She explained in amazement how some of us look so much like her friends and family yet we are all from America. This interaction made me reflect on my own personal history and curiosity, wondering from which African country my ancestors were extracted. In the moment of meeting the governor’s wife, I was reminded of the kindness we had received through out our entire journey. Despite the stereotypes, many Nigerians are so kind and referred to us as family using terms such as auntie, sister, brother and cousin knowing we were from American. This is the most unique Christmas I have ever experienced and I want to continue the tradition of giving and serving others on Christmas day.
